Another meme from Julie: Jumpology

Julie in Michigan has another meme going right now: a jumpology meme. You can read her account on Phillippe Halsman's Jump Book and her family's attempt to create jumpology pictures here. Not only did she challenge her readers to do the same--and I did just that with my family today--this subject intrigued me.

So, I googled jumpology and Phillippe Halsman. One website has interpretations of the basic principles of jumpology. For example, crouchers (my older son) are competitive. Reachers (my daughter and I) are ambitious and purposeful. My younger son and husband? From the pictures I took of them, it appears that they are a combination of a reacher and croucher! You can read the interpretations here.

The wikipedia account of Phillippe Halsman has a picture of the Life magazine cover of Marilyn Monroe jumping, photographed by Halsman himself.

OK, now for the pictures. You can see the one of all three of my kids above. Julie said it was tough to take pictures of the jumpers. She's right. Halsman must have gone through hundreds of pictures for each subject until he got one shot just right. What I did was set my camera to take several shots, one right after the other, and during that time frame the "jumper" would jump up and down a few times.

Problem is, when I downloaded the pictures, I found that the program would either show all the shots on one screen, or as a stop-action movie. So I had to crop a shot from each jumper's series of pictures. Hence, the clarity isn't as good as I'd like it to be, but you can get the gist of what kind of jumpers we are from these.

Here's my older son....

then my daughter....
my younger son......
my husband.... and finally, myself.
That was fun! Now, I hope you try this yourself and have your families join in the fun, too. If you are a blogger, post the pictures on your blog and let me know in the comments section. If you are not, and you want to share with me (but I would not post pictures unless you specifically ask me to), go ahead!

One more thing. A few posts ago, I was frustrated about our computer problems. I want to thank my brother-in-law Mike for fixing the problems, no easy feat (well maybe for him, but not for the rest of us ordinary people) while my sister and her family were visiting during Fourth of July weekend. If not for him, I would not be posting right now!

Oh, they are terrific! And how fun to see the whole family. I will show these to my kids as soon as they wake up.

Your post reminds me (belatedly) that my camera has a special setting for action shots. Maybe I'll try again...
